Recordings
This discography is a work-in-progress, which currently lists more
than ninety collections and twenty-five compilations. Other recordings
will be added as the information becomes available.
What is the difference between a "collection" and a "compilation"?
I'm glad you asked.
A collection was recorded in a single or multiple sessions
with the intention of releasing the recordings on one album. They
can be recordings by a single artist (Ella Fitzgerald or Thomas Hampson),
a group (the Dave Brubeck Quartet or Michael Legrand's Orchestra), or multiple
artists (Ben Bagley's collections or Red Hot + Blue).
A compilation is an album of previously released recordings, gathered
from a variety of sources (like the Smithsonian compilation).
Then why is the Sinatra album on the collections list? For
every rule there must be an exception.
An album is a collection of songs that is released on one or more
of the currently available formats. That format can be either vinyl
(shown as LP), cassette, compact disc, or any other future or past format
(i.e. 8-track tape or 4-track reel-to-reel, neither of which are included
in this discography). I know this may sound condescending to some,
but it bugs me when someone refers to an artist's latest release as his
new "CD". It's an album, no matter what machine you play
it on.
